The Punjab Assembly has taken a bold step in raising the salaries of its members. Reportedly, beginning January 1st, each Member of the Provincial Assembly (MPA) will draw Rs500,000 a month. The bill passed with a majority in favor of this very pay hike. Members of the Assembly were said to have shared happy feelings and congratulated each other after the session.

Opponents, however, have some reservations regarding this proposed pay hike. Leader of the Opposition Ahmad Khan Bhuchar has raised questions over the legality of the bill under the Parliamentary Laws Act of 1972. Malik Ahmad Khan, Speaker Punjab Assembly, while assuring the house that the bill is by existing laws, praised the decision as positive and justified.
