4 Minute Restroom Break Delays 125 Trains in Seoul

This week, a four-minute break taken by a train operator for a restroom visit caused a delay for 125 trains in Seoul, leaving hundreds of passengers late in going to their destinations.

The incident took place early last week at around 8 in the morning, when a conductor rushed to an early station to be able to use the restroom situated on a different floor from the platform.

The delay took four minutes and 16 seconds and subsequently caused a chain reaction that caused trains to be rescheduled by upwards of 20 minutes. An engineer monitored as the conductor left and returned to the train.

In normal circumstances, round-line operators would work without breaks, on average, two to three hours. They, however, tend to use restrooms away from platforms because even portable toilets are not handy.

Yet, Seoul’s metro handled the incident quite well, ensuring that the passengers experienced minimal inconvenience in reaching their destination.
