As of January 1, 2025, the Schengen zone has welcomed Romania and Bulgaria as official members, ending a long 13-year wait for both countries. This newly enlarged Schengen area now comes to 29 members and thus permits free travel across vast parts of Europe.
The journey to being part of such a membership was not an easy course for either of the two. Initially, some objections came from Austria and other members to the two countries joining. But, after arriving at the understanding regarding border protection, all the objections were lifted, making it easier for Romania and Bulgaria to join.

It is a historic moment in time, and now both countries are expected to realize an economic improvement of at least one percentage point. With border crossings no longer needed, lorry drivers and travelers are the happiest at this moment.
Truly, this marks a big win for Romania and Bulgaria, and something bigger for the Schengen area as well!
