Shoigu’s Visit to China: Strengthening Strategic Cooperation

On his part, Secretary of the Security Council of Russia Sergei Shoigu will participate in strategic security consultations and a meeting on law enforcement cooperation between Russia and China. The events are meant to discuss pressing issues of both a bilateral character and an international one.

Visit of Sergei Shoigu to China for Strategic Security Consultation

According to Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian, Sergei Shoigu, Secretary of the Security Council of Russia, will attend the 19th round of the annual China-Russia Strategic Security Consultation and the ninth meeting of the China-Russia Law Enforcement and Security Cooperation Mechanism, to be held from November 11 to 15 in China.

Key Meetings and Discussions

Besides that, Shoigu is also scheduled to discuss issues separately with high-ranking Chinese officials: Wang Yi, member of the Political Bureau of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China, director of the Office of the Central Commission for Foreign Affairs; Chen Wenqing, secretary of the Central Political and Legal Affairs Commission. The discussions would be held on the most critical aspects of the bilateral and international agenda in an effort to develop strategic coordination and deepen the consensus reached by the leaders of China and Russia earlier this year.

Consultation Focus Areas

Sino-Russian close coordination on matters of mutual interest has made the two countries comprehensive strategic partners for a “new era.” Wang Yi and Shoigu’s talks are scheduled for November 12. They are expected to cover many salient security matters, including discussions on the Russia-Ukraine War, the Middle East, NATO, the Taiwan Straits, and nuclear deterrence.

Key Issues and Priorities of Cooperation

Other items on the agenda apparently include cybersecurity, climate security, and transport line security, Global Times reported, citing experts. The Russian Security Council said the talks would discuss “current problems of international and regional security” as well as priorities for the further development of bilateral cooperation.

Besides this, Shoigu will also meet with Chen Wenqing to discuss various problems of extremism, terrorism, and transnational crime. Additionally, his current visit will cover attending Airshow China 2024, taking place in Zhuhai, Guangdong Province, where, for the first time, Russia’s Sukhoi Su-57 fighter jet is expected to make an appearance.

Strengthening Bilateral Relations

In September, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi met with Shoigu in St. Petersburg and informed him of China’s commitment to further promoting strategic communication with Russia in a bid to enrich the traditional bilateral relationship between the two countries.

Conclusion

The visit by Shoigu has marked the continuous strategic cooperation between China and Russia on security coordination and the resolution of important international problems. Both countries are trying to increase strategic communication through these meetings to strengthen their bilateral relations for at least the next decade.
