Cricket South Africa (CSA) has announced its playing XI for the first Test against Pakistan, set to begin on December 26 at SuperSport Park, Centurion. The two-match series holds significant importance for South Africa, as a single victory would secure their spot in the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) final.
All-Pace Attack with Corbin Bosch’s Test Debut
In a bold move, South Africa has opted for an all-pace attack for the series opener due to the absence of Keshav Maharaj. The team will field uncapped fast-bowling all-rounder Corbin Bosch, who has earned his Test debut after an impressive run in first-class cricket, boasting an average of 40.46 with the bat in 34 matches.

Bosch recently showcased his all-round potential during the final ODI against Pakistan in Johannesburg, contributing a vital 40-run knock and taking the key wicket of centurion Saim Ayub. His inclusion adds depth to South Africa’s bowling lineup, featuring pace spearheads Kagiso Rabada, Marco Jansen, and Dane Paterson. Notably, left-arm spinner Keshav Maharaj has been ruled out due to injury, leaving South Africa without a specialist spinner.
Ryan Rickelton Retains His Spot
Top-order batter Ryan Rickelton retains his place in the lineup, thanks to his scintillating century in the second Test against Sri Lanka in Gqeberha. His consistency will be crucial as South Africa looks to dominate the Boxing Day Test and build momentum for the series.
The batting lineup is headlined by skipper Temba Bavuma, with promising talents such as Tony de Zorzi, Aiden Markram, and Tristan Stubbs filling key roles. Middle-order mainstay David Bedingham and wicketkeeper Kyle Verreynne add stability to the side.
Pakistan’s Squad and Preparations
Pakistan, led by Shan Masood, comes into the series with a blend of youth and experience. Notable names include vice-captain Saud Shakeel, prolific batter Babar Azam, and rising star Saim Ayub, who impressed with his century in the recent ODI series against South Africa.
The bowling attack, spearheaded by pacers Naseem Shah and the returning Mohammad Abbas, will look to exploit conditions at Centurion. Left-arm spinner Noman Ali and all-rounders Salman Ali Agha and Aamir Jamal provide additional options for the visitors.
What’s at Stake?
This Test series serves as a pivotal moment for both teams. South Africa’s focus will be on securing a place in the WTC final, while Pakistan aims to strengthen their Test credentials after mixed performances in recent series.
With the first Test set to unfold on Boxing Day, cricket fans can expect an intense contest as two competitive sides lock horns in Centurion.
