South Korea Declares 7 Day National Mourning After Tragic Plane Crash

The South Korean government has declared a national mourning period of 7 days due to the horrific airplane crash, which last counted 179 lives. As per the local media, two crew members were rescued. Acting President Choi Sang-mok announced this decision during an emergency safety meeting only hours after the passenger airliner fell from the skies, as reported by Yonhap News Agency. “We extend our deepest condolences and sympathy to the bereaved families of those who lost their lives during this unexpected tragedy,” Choi said.

The Finance Ministry said memorial altars would be situated at the site of the crash, as well as at 17 different cities and provinces. Mourning ribbons will also be worn by public officials in respect of the victims.

One Boeing 737-800 of Jeju Air, carrying a total of 181 people, including six member crews, suffered this tragic event. It was 9:07 A.M. local time (0007 GMT) in Muan County, about 288 kilometers southwest of Seoul when the airplane caught fire because of a reported malfunction in the landing gears during a landing. Without a landing gear, the aircraft skidded on the ground before colliding into a concrete wall and erupting into flames with an ear-splitting explosion.

Returning from Bangkok, a twin-engine Boeing veered off the runway, crashed into a fence, and exploded against a wall in flames.
