South Korea’s Ex-Defense Minister Detained Over Martial Law Declaration

Kim Yong-hyun was formerly the defense minister of South Korea and got arrested this early Sunday for allegedly participating in declaring martial law during the last week which aggravated the political crisis in the country. He had also tendered a resignation on the back of a short-lived martial law which was promulgated by President Yoon Suk-yeol and quickly voted out by the parliament.

Before his arrest, the travel embargo was imposed on Kim. A police investigation has been initiated against accusations of inciting insurrection that implicated President Yoon and others, with that news coming just a day after he survived an impeachment from the parliament. Six opposition parties moved the impeachment motion needing 200 votes out of the 300-member parliament to pass. However, a near-total boycott by Yoon’s People Power Party (PPP) saved him, although his political future remains uncertain.

The opposition intends to bring forth a new impeachment motion within the week.
