President Zardari Reaffirms Commitment to Regional Marine Cooperation

On Monday, the President reaffirmed the commitment of Pakistan for regional marine cooperation and for peace, progress, and sustainability in the Indian Ocean region. He considered the engagement of countries to fully release the ocean’s potential in fighting climate challenges very important.

President Zardari made this statement in a video message to the third Forum on Blue Economy Cooperation in the China-Indian Ocean Region. “Pakistan is ready to partner with all stakeholders to foster marine cooperation and maintain the region as a haven for peace, progress, and sustainability,” he said, stating the severe issues posed by climate change, the degradation of ecosystems, and pollution.

The forum will run from December 14-16, 2012, in Kunming, China, and is organized by the China International Development Cooperation Agency. According to him, the future economic growth of the world will largely depend on the East with its enormous population resources. The ocean has, according to him, the life-keeping shared backbone and the most immense opportunities of economics.

Pakistan’s efforts to develop a blue economy through protecting ecosystems and fighting pollution were mentioned. He said the BRI will serve Pakistan, as he envisions, to include technology advancement and knowledge sharing in the name of marine conservation, and he did mention the making of the CPEC as well.

The president praised China’s Global Development Initiative and CIDCA’s efforts to embed sustainability in the forum. And notably, he praised the inclusion of capacity building in the agenda of the forum as well as the island countries within the purview of the forum.

The event highlighted the SK Hydropower Station, the Orange Line of Lahore, and the whole-year availability of Khunjerab Pass as milestones achieved. Progress was also praised when it came to Gwadar Port, industrial free zone development, and the Gwadar New International Airport for unlocking the city’s financial potential.
