Actor and author Mira Sethi has recently shared her frustrations of being a writer via her Instagram stories. The first post included a thread from an American novelist, Anne Lamott where she advised that writers just sit and write until they give birth to a bad first draft. Lamott is famous for her book, Bird by Bird, and explains that one should write but with the intent to remove the boredom, lies, and pretensions in the next drafts.

Sethi had a strong viewpoint against this. For writing pretensions and lies, she said that one writes for fun because it soothes the traumatic experience and makes the great ideas flow even from the worst writing. Writers have a way of soothing their traumas even as they bless the pages, all without having to be fully honest.
There is also the hash and cash struggle on the writer in TikTok’s Golden Age. A mention was made concerning the kinds of trashy novels that pop up on social media or fanfiction sites only to find their way to the shelves for ultimate selling. She was probably referring to the kind of reviews flooding TikTok about books everyone’s got an opinion about. Then again, she could be giving a pat on the back to those whom social media cannot distract from writing.

Whatever the case, there is no contention on any side at all. Sethi sarcastically commented on the thrill of having only seven strangers reading a four-year-long book. And we within those seven readers take huge pride in it.
But as with all her books, fewer readers read them, but around 350,000 viewers watch her on HUM TV. For such viewers, perhaps it’s time to grab a Sethi book instead of wasting time on TikTok.
